PM Narendra Modi met actor R Madhavan and ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan. The Prime Minister discussed R Madhavan’s upcoming film ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’, which is based on Nambi Narayanan’s life. A former Indian scientist and aerospace engineer of the Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO). During the meeting, Modi also raised concerns about the hardships the scientist had faced in the past.

In the film, R Madhavan plays the role of the ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan. The actor is also making his directorial debut with the film.

Nambi Narayanan is an Indian scientist and aerospace engineer hailing from the state of Tamil Nadu. Nambi was the head of ISRO’s Cryogenic division when he was implicated in a fake spying case. In November 1994, he was charged with leaking confidential information to foreign agents. Nambi Narayanan was arrested (when the Congress was heading the government in Kerala) and was interrogated by the IB. He claimed that he was forced to make false accusations against top ISRO officials. Nambi had also claimed that he was subjected to inhumane torture when he refused to comply with their demands and confess to the crime which never happened.

Nambi Narayanan, who was given clean chit by the CBI in the case, has maintained that the Kerala Police had “fabricated” the case and the technology he was accused to have stolen and sold in the 1994 case did not even exist at that time. In 1998, the Supreme Court had dismissed the charges against Nambi.

A high-level probe panel appointed by the Supreme Court to take erring cops to task for causing “tremendous harassment” and “immeasurable anguish” to Nambi Narayanan submitted its report to the Apex Court on April 4, 2021.

It is a big victory for the scientist but a clear setback for Congress in Kerala and CPI(M)-led state government that vigorously pursued the case. The soaring political career of Karunakaran was affected and former Prime Minister P V Narsimha Rao and his son Prabhakar Rao’s names also cropped up during the investigation into the case.

Political observers say the verdict could create tension in the state Congress and many questions will crop up against senior leaders like A K Antony and Oommen Chandy, who led a formidable group against Karunakaran. Antony had succeeded Karunakaran as the Chief Minister after he resigned in the wake of the Spy case in 1994.
