Christians and Muslims who have converted to Dalits will not be allowed to contest from seats reserved for scheduled castes in elections. Apart from this, he will not be able to get other benefits related to reservation. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad gave this information while answering a question in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday (11 February 2021).
While Hindu, Sikh or Buddhism SC’s will be eligible to contest from reserved seats. At the same time, they will also be able to enjoy other reservation related benefits. Ravi Shankar Prasad gave information on the issue while answering the question of BJP leader GV L Narasimha Rao.
Talking about the eligibility to contest elections from reserved areas, Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “As per the third paragraph of the Structure (Schedule Cast) Order, no person who is different from Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist religion is considered a member of the Scheduled Caste. ” On the basis of the above mentioned the Law Minister made it clear how the reservation policy will not be applicable for Dalits who accept Islam or Christianity.
The law minister also clarified that no amendment proposal exists to prohibit a person belonging to a scheduled caste / tribe converting to Islam or Christianity, contesting parliamentary or Lok Sabha elections.
